Grazing occupies The Royal Hotel, Gundaroo — built in 1865 by local William Affleck and classified by the National Trust as a building of historic significance. The restaurant opened in 2003 and is run by husband and wife Kurt and Tanya Neumann, with Kurt as head chef; it is one of Australia's most awarded regional restaurants. The village sits in the Yass Valley on the Southern Tablelands, thirty minutes from Canberra. The framing throughout is restaurant first — weddings are hosted with the same kitchen and the same ethos, not run as a separate business.

Setting & Style

Ceremonies happen outdoors: beneath the canopy of the property's iconic weeping willow, or among seasonal blooms in the landscaped gardens, with an edible garden and orchard alongside and cattle grazing in the neighbouring pastures. Drinks and canapés follow on the timber deck. The reception is the Stone Room — a restored, stone-walled dining hall with vaulted timber ceilings, garden views and fairy lights. For smaller gatherings the original hotel's private dining rooms take up to 20.

Ideal For

Couples who want the food to be the centre of the day and are happy for the venue to be a restaurant rather than a purpose-built function centre. It handles a wide span — 15 to 110 seated, or up to 200 standing — so it suits both an intimate dinner and a full reception. Being half an hour from Canberra with parking directly outside and ramped, accessible entry makes it easy on guests.

The Need-to-Knows

No pricing is published — menus and fees come from the events team. But one thing the venue does state plainly is worth knowing: “there's no ‘wedding tax’! We charge the same fees regardless of whether you're celebrating a wedding or another event.” Included in the hire are ceremony chairs and a signing table, and reception chairs, tables and linen down to cloth napkins; centrepieces, place cards and styling are for a florist or stylist to bring. A dedicated coordinator from the venue's own team runs the day and liaises with vendors. The reception space is indoors, but there is no fixed wet-weather plan for the ceremony — the venue works it out per wedding depending on party size, so pin that down early. There is a private area for the bridal party rather than a dedicated bridal suite. No accommodation on site: local rooms are within walking distance, but the venue notes that capacity for large groups in Gundaroo is limited and suggests a bus. The restaurant serves lunch Thursday to Sunday and dinner Thursday to Saturday.

Standout Feature

A 160-year-old coaching inn where the kitchen is the reason people come. Very few wedding venues in this campaign are, first and foremost, an award-winning restaurant — here the wedding menu is built by the same chefs, from the same local produce, that earned the reputation.
