About

Overview & Vibe

A cellar door on Shiralee Road just outside Orange, built around an original blue stone barn dating to the late 1800s. The tasting room is in the converted barn and looks out over the manor home, the outbuildings, the vines and the farmland beyond. The wine behind it is serious: Philip Shaw ran winemaking for Rosemount and then for Southcorp before planting 47 hectares at Koomooloo, 900 metres up on the slopes of Gaanha Bula / Mount Canobolas, in 1988–89.

Setting & Style

Grounds rather than rooms. The venue describes indoor and outdoor spaces across the cellar door grounds, kept deliberately flexible — a tree-lined driveway, gardens around the stone buildings, and the vineyard itself. The estate’s own photographs show a confetti exit under a vine-covered pergola, long tables candlelit inside the stone building, bridal parties on the lawns, blossom against the bluestone, and couples walking the orchard rows. The soil is 12-million-year-old olivine basalt over deep limestone — the volcano is the reason the region is cool-climate.

Ideal For

Couples who care what is in the glass and want a small, wine-led wedding at a genuinely credentialled Orange producer, and who are comfortable working the detail out by conversation rather than reading it off a page.

The Need-to-Knows

  • Nothing is published — not a capacity, not a price, not a named wedding space. Third-party listings quote figures such as “up to 120 guests” and describe a courtyard with railway-sleeper archways; none of that comes from the winery itself. Ask the events line directly.
  • Treat the wedding copy as a placeholder and rely on the conversation.
  • There is a dedicated events contact — (02) 6362 0710, events@philipshaw.com.au — separate from the cellar door, the wine club and the winery office.
  • The cellar door runs 11am–5pm, seven days, closed only Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and open on all other public holidays. Tastings are $15 per person, or $30 with a local cheese plate — those are visitor rates, not wedding catering.
  • Food is described only in general terms: seasonal farm-to-table, sustainable and organic, with an emphasis on local meat. No menu and no dietary statement is published.
  • No accommodation on site. Orange is a few minutes away and has the beds.

Standout Feature

A late-1800s blue stone barn on a 900-metre volcanic vineyard, run by the family whose father made the wine for Rosemount and Penfolds.

Price Notes

  • Pricing is provided on enquiry — no package, per-head rate, venue hire fee, minimum spend or deposit is published anywhere.
  • Guest capacity is not published by the winery, and figures quoted on other websites do not come from Philip Shaw — confirm numbers with the venue directly.
  • Part of the wedding copy appears to be unedited template text from a different winery in another country, referring to a "Home Ranch deck" and a tasting flight that do not match this estate. Read the wedding details with that in mind and confirm anything that matters.
  • The only published prices are cellar-door visitor rates rather than wedding rates: wine tasting $15 per person, hosted by the cellar door team, and Taste & Plate at $30 per person, which adds a small plate of local cheese, handmade lavosh and accompaniments.
  • Catering is described in one sentence and no menu is published: 'Our focus is seasonal farm-to-table, sustainable and organic foods with an emphasis on local meat.' No dietary position is stated, so dietary_options_supported is NULL. A 2023 wedding review published describes the food served - 'the nibbles were fantastic with a great variety... Lamb, duck and chicken were cooked to perfection' - which confirms the kitchen caters weddings but is a guest's account, not a menu.
  • Opening hours and closures are published consistently, which is worth noting given the rest: 'HOURS 11 AM - 5 PM 7 Days a week. CLOSED ~ Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Open all other public holidays.' The same text appears on Visit and Contact Us.
  • Five separate contacts are published, including a dedicated events line: 'Cellar Door 100 Shiralee Rd, Orange NSW 2800, (02) 6362 0710, info@philipshaw.com.au. Wine Club (02) 6362 7165, club@philipshaw.com.au. Events (02) 6362 0710, events@philipshaw.com.au. Winery/Admin (02) 6365 3422, jane@philipshaw.com.au. Damian Shaw +61 418 418 752.'
